AHSI exists to inspire and assist communities in providing all
students – regardless of their race, socio-economic status or learning
styles – with rigorous educational experience culminating in the
opportunity to receive a high school diploma and attend college.

WHO WE ARE

The Alternative High School Initiative (AHSI) is a network of youth
development organizations with over 290 sites nationwide committed to
creating educational opportunities for young people for whom
traditional school settings have not been successful. AHSI was
launched in 2003 as a response to the growing national trend of
diminishing graduation rates, affecting this country’s low income,
African American and Latino youth. Since its formation, AHSI has grown
to include twelve organizations with high quality, innovative
alternative school models that promote rigor, relevance, and
relationships as integral parts of the learning experience for young
people, as well as AHSI partnerships in Indianapolis, Nashville, and
Newark.

AHSI is a collaboration of organizations working with local
communities to generate and sustain safe, top quality high schools for
vulnerable youth. Together these organizations present families,
districts and policy stakeholders with a portfolio of small,
alternative high school options. The schools are student-centered and
strive to have youth voice, project-based learning and leadership
development drive the learning process.

AHSI engages in activities that:

Enhance each participating organization’s capacity to
improve the quality of its schools and programs, start and sustain new
schools in the network, and assess the effectiveness of its services

Collaborate to influence policy and practice in national
dialogues about alternative education and youth development

Design and establish frameworks, habits, and culture for a
valuable and vigorous network of youth development organizations

With support from The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, AHSI is co-
convened by Big Picture Learning and National League of Cities
Institute for Youth, Education, and Families. AHSI’s co-conveners work
closely together to facilitate and manage the work of AHSI which
includes building capacity to deliver high quality teaching and
learning; strengthening the network by convening its members and
hosting other learning exchanges; connecting with municipal leaders
and other policy makers; and enhancing participating organizations’
individual and collaborative work.
