I just finished a book which just published in 2008. The book offered
me even more encouragement that the new reforms for education
recognize the primary constructs used to form the alternative
education movement and the development of alternative schools and
programs. If you are looking for some research to help others
understand your alternative school or why the school district should
have an alternative learning environment, read this book. Better yet,
have your critics read the book.

Book:

Christensen, Clayton M., Horn, Michael B., Johnson, Curtis w. 2008.
Disrupting Class: How Disruptive Innovation Will Change the Way the
World Learns. MsGraw Hill. New York.

             Recommendations for change:
             We need a modular system

             Autonomous Business Units

Power and separation to make customization possible

Student centrality is the baseline for change

The following resources and many more appear in the book identified
above. I selected three that begged further review. They may be of
interest to you.

operational differences that may be related to student outcomes. The
operation differences of alternative schools identified in "What is
Alternative About Your Alternative" (www.IAAE.net)align with the new
clarification schemes for future schools.
